Students would spend 10 hours conversing with international students at St. Michael’s. This will be arranged through the ELS program. St. Michael’s would be opened up so that conversations might take place in comfortable surroundings.

2. Senior rides to church (We supply the gas money)

We would love to have one or more students provide rides to our senior shut-ins so that they can come to church on Sundays. St. Michael’s will supply gas money at .50 cents a mile. We have two or three seniors now and may have one or more in the future. It is a good opportunity to develop some good relationships with seniors who love to get out when they can. Have interested students see Pastor Bob at St. Michael’s

3. Service projects through the Women’s Guild and Quilters: Attend meetings when possible, learn to make quilts and enjoy fellowship with the ladies.

The Women’s Guild and Quilters at St. Michael’s have a long history of helping people in Portland and around the world. They not only make quilts for the needy, but also look in on and help shut-ins. Plans are now being made to see how the groups can continue their work and incorporate some interested young women from Concordia. It is a wonderful way to do service learning together with some wonderful women, who have spent their lives in serving others.

4. Kid’s day

Once a month on Saturday mornings St. Michael’s invites children from the community to play games, practice crafts, and learn Bible stories. It is a wonderful opportunity to develop relationships with children in the community and become a big brother or sister to neighborhood children.

5. Serve at Africa House 8523 SE Stark, Portland, OR 97216

There are up to 17,000 refugees and immigrants from Africa in the Greater Portland area. Many of them receive aid in the English language, getting jobs, and adjusting to America at the Africa House. The Africa House is run in conjunction with the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) and is always looking for volunteers.
