AmeriCorp* VISTA Position Description
Position Title: Financial Education and Asset Building Outreach Coordinator
Project Sponsor: Portland Housing Center, www.portlandhousingcenter.org
Portland Housing Center Mission: Everyone deserves access to homeownership. The Portland Housing Center makes it possible through quality education, counseling and financial services.
Project Location: 3233 NE Sandy Blvd. Portland, OR 97232
Position Summary: The VISTA will conduct activities such as recruiting and training volunteers for outreach to families at risk of foreclosure, developing training manuals, scheduling classes or raising program resources. The VISTA will connect closely with other volunteers that are part of this national program to reduce the number of foreclosures, stabilize communities affected by foreclosures, and protect and build personal and community assets in low- and moderate-income communities.
General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
• Collaborate with PHC HomeOwner Basics staff to offer financial education and asset
   building outreach in the community.
• Work with Portland Housing Center HomeOwner Basics staff and community partners to
  develop and update financial education curriculum.
• Facilitate the provision of financial education curriculum in community venues through the
  use of volunteers.
• Develop and implement financial education program evaluation.
• Recruit and train volunteer facilitators for financial education and outreach workshops.
• Assist in the outreach for and maintenance of Individual Development Accounts.
• Complete and submit all necessary VISTA paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
• Attend and complete all VISTA training and service requirements including orientation,
  trainings, and team meetings.
 
Training and Qualifications
U.S. Citizen at least 18 years of age
Responsible, self-motivated, and able to handle multiple on-going projects
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Relevant non-profit or community development experience
Computer skills required (MS Office products proficiency helpful)
Other language skills a plus
Ability to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment and follow-through
Maintains regular and timely attendance
Thrives in a fast-paced work environment
 
 Preferred Additional Qualifications:
 
• Experience in financial education and working with volunteers
• Ability to work with diverse populations.
• Experience in program evaluation.
• Ability to work on projects independently and as a team member.
This position requires a commitment to serve as a full-time employee for one full year.  Compensation is paid directly to VISTA Leaders in the form of a living allowance from AmeriCorp* VISTA.   Health insurance is provided.  At the end of the term of service, an education award or cash stipend may be provided.  For more information about AmeriCorps VISTA, see  http://www.nationalservice.gov/about/programs/americorps_vista.asp.

Member Benefits Include:
 
• A taxable, monthly living allowance (before taxes, approximately $865).
• Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an
  education award of $4,725. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans
  or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade
  schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
• Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the
  accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable).
• Basic medical insurance (covers members only, not dependents; vision and dental not
  included).
• Child care allowance for those who qualify.
• Professional development, trainings and networking opportunities.
 
Transportation Information:
• Project site is accessible by public transportation.
• Personal vehicle is recommended to travel to outreach sites. Mileage reimbursement provided.

Service Dates: September 14, 2009 - August 17, 2010 Length of Term: 1700 hours (11-months)

About the Organization:Sports4Kids is a nonprofit that provides safe, healthy playtime at low-income schools to create a positive environment for learning and teaching. Our recipe for rescuing recess and making play a part of every day has transformed more than 170 schools across the country. We put trained adults on the playground to introduce classic games that are disappearing from schoolyards, like kickball and four-square, as well as new games designed to build leadership and foster teamwork. When Sports4Kids partners with a school, not only are kids more physically active, but the whole school day goes better. That’s why the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation calls Sports4Kids “America’s best investment in healthy kids and healthy schools.” 

About AmeriCorps:AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 75,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.  AmeriCorps programs focus on work to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Program Duties (if applicable):Planning and implementing sports and play based programming during recess, in school and after school hours at a public elementary school. ·         Recess - create a safe and inclusive playground yard and be a significant presence on the yard by organizing and playing large games with 20+ students as well as role modeling positive behavior·         Junior Coach Program – organize a youth leadership program by facilitating trainings and working with teachers and staff·         Class Game Time - lead individual classes in skills building, cooperative games, and activities to increase awareness of rules and boundaries at recess·         After School Program – organize a homework/snack and a physical activity period for around 20 students focusing on building a community as well as reinforcing the Sports4Kids philosophy·         Interscholastic leagues - recruit and coach students for developmental sports leagues.  This includes building a school community and coordinating volunteers Administrative Duties:·        Maintain communication between Sports4Kids staff, school staff, teachers, families, and volunteers·        Collect and maintain paperwork including organizing daily, weekly, and monthly schedules and timesheets·        Collect and maintain paperwork and data for various grant requirements 

Qualifications:·        Demonstrated experience leading groups of children with the ability to engage and inspire youth·        Ability/Willingness to commit to completion of 1700 during the program year (40+ hours/week of service, including participating in occasional night and weekend service opportunities such as community service projects)·        Motivated self-starter with clear and open communication skills ·        Humorous and playful with ability to set clear goals and follow through with flexible and creative problem solving tools ·        Conceptual ability for the larger perspective with a strong attention to detail and multi-tasking·        Experience interacting with diverse communities and the ability to integrate into and existing school community·        Knowledge of computer and internet based programs for use in communication and grant requirements·        Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written

AmeriCorps*VISTAFor over 40 years, members of AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) have actively served low-income areas by mobilizing people, businesses and organizations with the goal of creating sustainable healthy communities.  The mission of AmeriCorps*VISTA has not changed since mandated by Congress in 1964, “AmeriCorps*VISTA builds permanent infrastructure in non-profit organizations to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty.”   

Overview of the Summer Associates ProgramORCC Summer VISTA Corps Members will serve for 10-weeks in programs that aim to prepare at-risk rising 9th graders for a successful transition into high school.  The members will serve as either Program Assistants, providing academic support (tutoring) and general program support at their placement sites, or as Field Trip Coordinators, organizing college and career visits for participants.  These full-time positions will start on or around June 15th. 

All Summer Associates will attend a pre-service orientation on Friday, June 12th.

As a Summer Associate, your contributions will have an impact on those being served.   

General Eligibility

  • Summer Associates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of placement
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, National or Legal Resident
  • Able to commit and serve on a full-time basis for 10 weeks
  • Not listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry

Experience working with youth and some college education are preferred qualifications.  Benefits and SupportIn addition to making a credible effort to help people and communities escape poverty, Summer Associates receive benefits and support during and after successful completion of summer service.  Associates are eligible to receive:

  • A $1,000 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a $200 summer stipend
  • On-site orientation and training
  • A living allowance to cover necessities during service
  • Involvement in the AmeriCorps*VISTA Alumni Network and eCommunity

How to Get Involved We will have two recruitment sessions on April 27th at Portland State and on April 28th (location TBD) from 5:00-7pm. Students will get details of the program, have an interview with Oregon Campus Compact, and will be able to circulate through a “service fair” featuring the placement sites. At the end of the evening, the candidates will turn in their cover letter and resume along with their site preferences. From there, ORCC will screen the members and make referrals to the sites for site interviews. Become a summer Camp Counselor for Children and Adults with Disabilities!  Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp provides one of the most comprehensive outdoor recreation programs available to individuals with significant disabilities. The summer consists of one-week sessions operating from mid-June to mid August, filled with adventure course activities, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, swimming, arts & crafts, hiking, music, dancing, campfires, skits, and much more. Counselors commit to a two-week session, receive valuable training from our Portland State University partners, and live at the camp site with their students during the volunteer experience.
