Make A Wish Foundation - Wish Department Internship

Wish Department Internship – Fall 2010

Mission:  The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oregon grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.

Overview:  Born in 1980 when a group of caring individuals helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 65 chapters in the U.S. and its territories.  The Oregon chapter serves children, ages 2 ½ through 17, that live in Oregon and Clark County, Washington, and has granted more than 2,200 local wishes since it began in 1983.  

Internship: The Wish Department at the downtown Portland office is searching for an intern for Fall 2010.  This unpaid internship opportunity will enhance the student’s project management, administrative and communication skills, which can be utilized in future for-profit or non-profit work experiences.  This internship may count for college credit as the university or college allows.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

•                      Junior or Senior undergraduate student, or recent graduate, with an interest in non-profits.

•                      Excellent communication and organizational skills; proven writing experience a plus.

•                      Ability to work within deadlines and in a professional manner.

•                      Experience with the Internet, Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.

•                      Must have personal transportation to and from the downtown Portland office; parking/public transportation reimbursement of $75 maximum per month.

•                      Willing to receive background check and sign confidentiality agreement.  

Availability:  15 – 20 hours per week for 12 weeks (Requirement: minimum 200 hours)

•                      Internship available for Fall 2010, depending on student’s academic schedule.

•                      Three to five days per week, depending on schedule and school requirements.  

Responsibilities:

Assist the Wish Department with:

•                      Assist the planning and coordinating of wishes, including research, budgets, creating itineraries, and working with other Make-A-Wish chapters across the country.

•                      Assist in medical outreach efforts

•                      Wish donor recognition

•                      Solicit donations to fill department’s Wish Enhancement inventory

•                      Assist with coordinating Holiday Magic, a holiday shopping party at two children’s hospitals

The Democratic Party of Oregon seeks a limited number of qualified and highly motivated interns for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters. A cover letter, resume and references should be submitted by the following deadlines:

 The ideal candidate should have excellent organizational and oral communication skills. Duties will primarily include assisting the Democratic Party of Oregon staff with event planning and preparation, mailing campaign activities and other projects as needd. The internship requires a dedicated individual who an work under direction as well as independently to complete time-sensitive project. These internships are unpaid. Many Democratic Party of Oregon interns have built relationships and connections which have allowed them to turn their work into paid positions with other non-profits, State Representatives and Senators and members of Congress.

Position Summary:

·         Assist in producing program documents, stories, and photographs that are useful in both program operations and resource development (fund raising). 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Develop single-page clinic set-up summaries for each of the nearly 100 program partners in the Portland area (may be extended to include partners in the Salem area based on separate agreement).

·         Write a number of stories from the field that describe how the program helps patients.  These stories will be used in fund raising proposals and performance reports.

·         Take photographs of various clinics in operation highlighting volunteers, partners, and patients. 

Other Duties:

·         Possible other documentation tasks include creating a Program Staff Manual (in part or in whole) that provides a variety of useful program information to employees. 

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

·         Strong written communications skills.

·         Good interpersonal skills, especially in terms of interviewing skills needed to support story development.·         Intermediate level Word and PowerPoint skills.
